After enjoying Hermosa’s truffle toasty soooooooooo much I’ve been craving another good toasty ever since! I’ve been meaning to check out The Old Boy since it opened its doors 6 weeks ago but dragging myself out of bed earlier on a work day, smack bang in the middle of winter, just didn’t seem so appealing to me. Last week, I felt the need to set a date to try it so I penned in a date with Willie for today. Luckily, The Old Boy is just a short drive from my place! How convenient!
The Old Boy took over Brumby’s old location (next to Pharmacy 777) so it is just a small cafe with a rustic feel. From what I saw, most people grabbed a coffee and muffin to go. There is however a casual lounge area for customers to enjoy their breakfast in house. There is even a spot in the corner to keep the little ones entertained.
WHAT WE ORDERED & THOUGHT
Coffee before work is always a good idea. Actually, coffee anytime is always a good idea! The key to conquering that daily corporate battle. Willie ordered a long mac and I ordered a soy capp. We both agreed that it was a little on the bitter side than we both would have liked.
Willie chose the most suitable jaffle for breakfast (boring!) – the scrambled egg and bacon jaffle. The lasagne jaffle jumped out at me even though it didn’t sound very “breakfasty”. Little Caesar’s lasagne pizza really wowed me so I thought this may be similar? We ended up sharing both jaffles so we could try both.
Served freshly toasted, the hot filling oozed out on first bite (be cautious). The lasagne jaffle was so full of flavour – jammed packed with sauce and cheese!!!
The bacon and egg one was too bland for me. The egg took up 90% of the filling and wasn’t well seasoned. I couldn’t taste much of the sweet chilli relish.
We probably should have stuck to eating our own jaffle of choice because I liked the lasagne one more and Willie liked the bacon and eggs one more.
Good to see a new addition to my neighbourhood! The jaffles were “nice” but nothing spectacular as they do not even come close to Hermosa’s toasty (OMG I REALLY WANT ONE NOW). Maybe my taste buds are tainted from Hermosa? The jaffles are a little on the pricey side…hmm maybe it’s the Applecross premium?
I will still go back to try more jaffles just to see how the rest taste – possibly get the biltong one next time! Not somewhere I would go to grab a coffee on the way to work. Penny’s Café is walking distance from my house and serve tasty coffee.
Next week, I’m going to be dragging Willie to Coco Belle Espresso Bar. I’ve heard really good things about it from workmates. Better pen it in before I get too lazy.
